Clear words on TV – Merkel on Ukraine attack: “A brutal attack”

Date:

In her first major public appearance after her resignation, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel sharply condemned Russia’s war of aggression. “This is a brutal attack that violates international law and for which there is no excuse,” Merkel said in Berlin on Tuesday evening.

Merkel further explained that: War is “a brutal attack that violates international law”, for which there is no excuse. You personally attach great importance to development in Ukraine. “Like many others, I am depressed these days,” Merkel said. “February 24 was a turning point and that worries me a lot.”

She would wonder, “Could we have done more to prevent the tragedy?” In her last days in office, the conflict had already escalated. “It was clear that this had to be taken very, very seriously.” However, she had faith in the federal government despite the difficult situation. During her tenure, “it was not possible to create a security architecture that could have prevented this (the war, mind you).”

For the first time since the end of her chancellorship, the former chancellor answered questions from a journalist. At the event organized by the Aufbau Verlag and the Berliner Ensemble, Merkel took a stand in an interview with “Spiegel” reporter Alexander Osang. He has portrayed Merkel several times.
