There is currently a heat wave raging in parts of Mexico, sometimes above 50 degrees, which has claimed dozens of lives. Temperatures above 45 degrees were expected on Sunday in the state of Yucatán on the Gulf of Mexico, popular with tourists.
At least 24 people died as a result of the heat wave in the northeastern state of San Luis Potosí from Thursday to Saturday, according to media reports.
Temperatures of more than 50 degrees have been recorded in the Huasteca region in recent days, said the general director of the state health agency, Ymuri Vaca Avila.
There has been a ‘worrying’ increase in the number of patients with heat stroke symptoms in health centres. In other states, such as Tamaulipas, people with these symptoms also received medical care.
Highest temperature since measurements started
According to the National Meteorological Service, the highest temperature since measurements began was recorded in Mexico City on Thursday: 34.3 degrees Celsius.
About a year ago, 104 people died in Mexico due to a heat wave.
