Wrong time, wrong place: If the car thieves had suspected that Carinthia’s No. 1 detective was on duty, they probably wouldn’t have entered through Arnoldstein.
It was stupid: without suspecting anything bad, the two Bulgarian drivers entered Austria from Italy on Mother’s Day and stopped in the morning after the border to buy vignettes. What they couldn’t have known: They were already in the crosshairs of Reinhold Wiedergut, the top investigator of the Villach highway police.
“A rusty car with Italian license plates and a new Audi A4 with Bulgarian license plates. “I smelled that something was wrong – and told my colleagues that we had to look into it,” the criminal said in the interview with “Krone”. And the Villacher was – as usual – right. The researcher took a close look at the papers – and found a hit! “The old car was ‘clean’, but the registration certificate for the A4 was fake. The chassis number did not match the paper.”
Entered before the victim noticed the theft
And so the handcuffs clicked on the spot for the two suspects. Although initially it was “only” because of forgery of documents. “When we first searched the search system, there were no hits. But that came up during the interrogation. At the same time, the owner of the stolen car reported the incident to the police in Bergamo. She had only recently noticed the theft.”
From that moment on, the suspects were no longer so calm. “In the beginning they usually act as if nothing can happen to them. And I’m sure they both have more on their plates. In the accomplice’s car we discovered high-tech devices that can intercept radio signals and produce duplicate keys.”
