Large amounts of untreated sewage flowed for hours into England’s largest and most famous lake, Lake Windermere. According to a BBC report on Wednesday, the eco-disaster that massively polluted the lake occurred in February due to a pump failure.
The BBC cited documents from United Utilities, which manages the sewerage network in north-west England. Accordingly, a malfunction caused the main pumps, which were supposed to clean the water entering the lake, to fail.
As a result, sewage was pumped into the famous lake intermittently for ten hours.
Even Taylor Swift has sung about England’s natural gem
The lake is not only considered a pearl of nature that attracts millions of visitors every year. It is also a popular seaside resort and is honored by many artists. It was sung by, among others, American pop star Taylor Swift in her song ‘The Lakes’.
