Visit from lawyer – Fritzl before release: “His eyes lit up”

Date:

The entire country knew it before Josef Fritzl himself: a day after it had not been legally decided that the 89-year-old would be released from the measure, he now knows it too. There was no joy, reports his lawyer Astrid Wagner. But only his physical condition prevented him from doing this. Fritzl is very happy…

“I disturbed Mr. Fritzl during his afternoon nap,” lawyer Astrid Wagner tells “Krone” about the visit to her client. A day after the decision was declared not legally binding, Josef Fritzl now knows for himself that he has been released from the institution for mentally abnormal criminals and taken to a normal prison.

“He heard the rumbling yesterday.”
However, the media hype did not go entirely unnoticed for the 89-year-old in Stein prison. “He heard the rumbling yesterday. “Also from other prisoners,” says lawyer Wagner. She read him the page-long decision word by word: “His eyes lit up.”

But Fritzl is not quite there yet, says his lawyer: “He thanked me very much. But that has to sink in first. But we have already discussed that we are going to tackle the release process.” But that will certainly take some time, says Astrid Wagner: “Rome was not built in one day.”

Fritzl strives for a life without control
Josef Fritzl himself expects that he will be released shortly after the ruling of the Krems regional court, which was positive for him. He also spoke about this with his lawyer: “His fellow prisoners also told him that the transition of the measure is the first step to freedom.” Her client’s ultimate goal is to be able to live self-determinately and without control. “After all, according to the report, he is no more dangerous than any other Austrian.”

It was different in 2009, when he was sentenced to life imprisonment and admission to the St. Pölten Regional Court for the Amstetten incest case. He held his daughter captive in a basement dungeon for 24 years and fathered seven children with her – one died at birth. Astrid Wagner emphasizes that the 89-year-old will not contact his family when he is released from prison. He only dreams of a house in the countryside – something his daughter was denied for so long…
