After the assassination attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, a Belgian radio presenter called for the assassination of Prime Minister Alexander De Croo – the speaker was subsequently suspended. The moderator meant his statements ‘playfully’, but it did not come across that way, according to a statement from local broadcaster Waregem1 on Thursday.
He completely misjudged the timing and context. “That is why the presenter was immediately suspended.” He also apologized to listeners and the station.
Moderator: “So I say: go ahead.”
According to VRT, the presenter literally said on Wednesday after Fico’s shooting became known: “To everyone who is considering shooting Alexander De Croo but does not dare because of the security measures around him: Look, it is possible to shoot the Prime Minister. So I say: go ahead.”
Fico was shot several times by a 71-year-old in Slovakia on Wednesday after a government meeting in the city of Handlová. His condition remained serious on Thursday.
The Prime Minister has filed a complaint
Belgian Prime Minister De Croo filed a complaint on Thursday in the city of Waregem in the west of the country. His spokesperson wrote on Platform X: “Incitement to violence is punishable.”
