A fatal canoeing accident occurred in Lech in Tyrol’s Ausserfern on Thursday afternoon. A 59-year-old German capsized his boat and a passerby discovered the man in the water. After a major search, the canoe was found – unfortunately too late – on a sandbank.
Around 4:30 p.m., the eyewitness raised the alarm: he had discovered a person floating behind a canoe near the inclined bridge in the Lech in the municipality of Bach. A search was immediately launched involving several fire brigades, water rescue, the emergency medical helicopter and the Red Cross.
Attempts at resuscitation failed
The emergency services found what they were looking for in Elbigenalp: they found the lifeless man on a sandbank about 150 meters above the Nikolaus Bridge and immediately started resuscitation measures. But in vain: they could no longer save the canoeist.
Autopsy ordered
It turned out that the deceased was a 59-year-old from the Kulmbach district of Bavaria. He probably ended up in the Lech in Steeg and subsequently capsized. An autopsy was ordered to determine the cause of death.
