In the northern French city of Rouen, police prevented an arson attack on a synagogue on Friday morning and shot the armed suspect, authorities said.
The man probably tried to set fire to the synagogue and was killed by emergency services, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin wrote on the online service X (formerly Twitter). The man approached the police officers, who opened fire and killed him.
The officers were warned because of “smoke development near the synagogue,” police sources said. “The man was armed with a knife and an iron bar,” a source familiar with the case told AFP.
