During renovation work “locked” in the facade: chicks had to die

Date:

The professional fire brigade of Klagenfurt had to complete a sad mission on Thursday. During renovation work, bird nests have become clogged during the plastering work. But there were still young animals inside.

The Nature Conservation Service raised the alarm because it was suspected that there were bird chicks or breeding grounds in the facade of an apartment building in Klagenfurt in the St. Peter district. The facade was recently renovated.

“We used the turntable ladder to open the holes together with nature conservation and Vogelhilfe Carinthia to get to the bottom of the matter,” reports the professional fire brigade of Klagenfurt. “Unfortunately, our suspicions were confirmed when we had to rescue four young birds that had died of pain and a bird egg from the facade.”

The recovered animals were handed over to the two organizations by the emergency services. “It is heartbreaking to see such acts that affect us all,” the firefighters said in shock. Because there is an accusation that the animals were simply not taken into account during the renovation work and that they had to die as a result.

The rescue option was not used
But there was even a chance to save her. “It was only when we had new evidence and witnesses and I threatened to open the holes at my own expense that the magistrate took action. And then it was too late,” criticizes Michaela Dworak from Vogelhilfe. “There were more dead birds in the facade, but we couldn’t get them out because otherwise we would have had to open the entire facade.”
