Assault with a hammer – attack on Pelosi – 30 years in prison for perpetrators

Date:

More than a year and a half after the hammer attack on the husband of top American politician Nancy Pelosi, the murderer was sentenced to 30 years in prison. The responsible judge announced this on Friday in San Francisco.

Paul Pelosi’s attacker was found guilty by a jury in November of attempted kidnapping of a government official and assault on an immediate family member of a government official. The act led to horror in the US at the time and to a debate about politically motivated violence.

The man suffered a skull fracture
Pelosi, now 84, was attacked and seriously injured at the couple’s San Francisco home in late 2022 – a few days before the US congressional elections. He required surgery after the attack for a fractured skull and serious injuries to his right arm and hands. The perpetrator himself targeted the then chairman of the House of Representatives, but did not find her during the attack. He was arrested on the spot. The Public Prosecution Service had demanded forty years in prison.

Attacker wanted to force Pelosi into a wheelchair
Shortly after the crime, US media revealed that the man was interested in several conspiracy myths and lies by former US President Donald Trump about alleged fraud in the 2020 presidential election on his online profiles. Police said at the time that the perpetrator planned to take the then-Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives hostage and “break her kneecaps.” He wanted to force the Democrat into a wheelchair to show other members of Congress that their “actions have consequences.”

A spokesperson for the Pelosis said the family couldn’t be more proud of Paul and his courage to save his own life the night of the attack and then come forward about it. He made no comment on the verdict itself.
