Dramatic moments for a couple in Mittersill, Salzburg: A mudslide caught the mason and his wife – both in hospital. Son André tells what exactly happened.
It hit the Oberpinzgau again. A violent storm shook the region around Mittersill Monday evening, triggering numerous mudslides. That is also the case at the Steger family’s estate in the Felbertal: “We had a mudslide behind the house,” says Andre Steger’s son in an interview with “Krone”.
Parents straighten windows when the second mudslide came
The landslide hit the barn of the Stegers and water was already coming in through a window. “Then my mom and dad went out to fix the window. Dad was working on the outside and Mommy on the inside. Suddenly a second stream of debris sprang up. My dad has it all. He was dragged in the mud and broke his spoke and wrist.” , said the Pinzgauer, describing the anxious moments.
“Then a wall of mud came through the window and hit my mother. She suffered a concussion.” The farmer managed to free himself from the mud, neighbors rushed over and gave first aid, Rescue took the couple to hospitals in Mittersill and Zell am See. “They are doing well given the circumstances, thank God.”
The fire brigade helped with the clean up. It was a long night for the volunteers: the first alarms went off at 8.30 pm, Commander Roland Rauchenbacher reports: “The first mudslide hit the main road in the direction of Hollersbach.” Meanwhile, the Salzach level in Mittersill rose to a looming 4.80 metres. 80 volunteers protected homes and dried off the water. The operation continued on Tuesday.
