Each Austrian is only entitled to ten corona tests. The “Krone” asked if this affected the infection situation.
After the chaos surrounding the new test strategy, the scheme came into effect on Friday. There are now – with some loopholes – just five free PCR tests per month for everyone. But how will this actually affect the infection process in the country? Complexity researcher Peter Klimek finds the administration of tests in the current phase “epidemiologically justified”. In an interview with Krone, he says: “The less you test, the later you find infections. But because the wave is leveling off now, it won’t have a big impact.”
monitor the situation closely
According to Klimek, the declining numbers are not endangered. However, he calls for the situation to be monitored very closely in the coming months: “It is difficult to say how long the situation will remain stable. We don’t know how long the immunity will last or if new variants will emerge. It remains to be seen whether the next wave will come in the fall or earlier and how severe it will be. But she will definitely come,” said the expert.
According to Klimek, one should definitely think about a new vaccination campaign in the summer and prepare the testing infrastructure in such a way that it can be restarted at any time.
Nine states, many solutions
As reported, the federal states have different solutions for the new test scheme. While in Vienna they want to arrange everything via “everything gargles” and without pharmacies, in Styria they switch completely to pharmacies. Tyrol, Salzburg and Upper Austria rely on mixed systems.
