The holiday paradise of New Caledonia is partly on fire. Young residents burn the city down. Companies owned by non-local entrepreneurs are particularly affected. Styrian Sandra Jung-Luttenberger fears for her life.
“We haven’t eaten anything since Monday,” says Sandra Jung-Luttenberger in an interview with “Krone”. She rarely has internet in the capital Nouméa and has to pay attention to the battery level. “I’m really scared for my life. Boys and young men in particular – estimated to be between 12 and 19 years old – are destroying the city. White businesses are particularly affected.”
Fear of water
The unrest in the overseas territory, which has already killed six people and injured hundreds, has been going on for just over a week. The riots were caused by a change in the electoral law put forward by the French government, which, according to independence supporters, would reduce the influence of the native population.
“I have lived here for four years now. Until a few days ago it was paradise. Now it is hell,” said the Styrian. Her husband runs a local water company. “It burned down.” Now residents are concerned that the water may also be poisoned.
Girlfriend raped
“We have formed a vigilante group and are now protecting each other. If we want to eat something, we barter with each other,” said the 51-year-old. “I was recently on holiday in Tahiti. If I had known what to expect at home, I would have stayed there.”
It is still unclear how Styria can leave the overseas territory. “It is 60 kilometers to the airport. But there are always blockages. You are also stopped. A friend was arrested and raped by the men. It’s just terrible.”
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, two Austrian tourists are also in the crisis area.
