According to the city council, a cat flooded the town hall in the municipality of Dokkum in the Netherlands and caused extensive damage. Estimates indicate that it is worth 325,000 euros.
The cat was discovered in May last year in the town hall of the Frisian community during construction work, broadcaster Omrop Fryslân reported on Friday.
Because it was not possible to catch the cat, the building was temporarily closed. The cat probably then turned on a tap, which initially caused water to seep into the furniture and walls unnoticed and also flow through the floors into the basement.
Walls and floors need to be replaced
The damage was so extensive that some of the employees had to work temporarily in another building. Some of the walls and floors even had to be replaced.
During the city council meeting on Thursday evening, councilor Bert Koonstra presented the final bill. “The insurance pays for the damage,” he said. “We can now close this cat file.” It could not be proven whether the cat was actually responsible for the open tap.
