Law Signed – Louisiana: Abortion Pill “Hazardous Substance”

Date:

In the US state of Louisiana, two different abortion pills are classified as ‘controlled dangerous substances’. This means that they fall under stricter medicines law. People who obtain medicines from this category without a valid prescription risk heavy fines and prison sentences.

Pregnant women receiving the drug should not be held liable. However, those affected would, for example, be family members who help them purchase the medicines. The use of mifepristone and misopristol is now only permitted in rare cases. For this to happen, the pregnant woman’s life must be in danger, or the fetus must not be able to survive. Abortion in cases of rape or incest is illegal in the US state.

Same category as Valium
Medicines such as Valium and Xanax also fall into the ‘controlled dangerous substances’ category, which applies to mifepristone and misopristol from October 1. For example, Valium is used in epilepsy to relieve seizures. Xanax is a powerful drug that helps with anxiety and panic disorders, among other things.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies mifepristone as reliable. It is usually used in combination with misoprostol for abortion. Mifepristone is used in more than 60 percent of abortions in the United States, is shipped across state lines and can be taken at home.

Approved in Austria since 1999
In Austria, the drug with the active ingredient is called Mifegyne and has been approved since 1999. In the US, individual states can regulate their own abortion laws. The national law was overturned almost two years ago.
