Propane gas bottles leaked on Saturday afternoon when a 35-year-old from Upper Austria drove off the road and overturned in a chicken grill truck. Due to the acute explosion hazard, a safety circle had to be set up. The rescue was not completed until after seven hours.
Around 3:30 p.m., a 35-year-old from Gampern (Vöcklabruck district) was driving her chicken grill truck on the B1 towards Bierbaum when she suddenly landed on the right shoulder and her vehicle overturned. Because the vehicle came to a stop on the other side of the road, a 21-year-old from Timelkam had to swerve his car into a meadow on the right to avoid a collision.
Propane gas threatened to explode
When the police arrived at the scene of the accident, there was already a strong smell of gas in the air. That is why all those present were quickly taken to safety, a barrier was set up and additional troops were called in. Special units of the hazardous substances fire brigade carried out measurements which showed that there was an acute risk of explosion in the exclusion zone. These measurements had to be carried out again and again because the gas continued to escape until the recovery work could begin.
Dangerous use
The truck contained four bottles of propane gas, containing a total of 71,000 liters of gas, according to the authority, which contained hazardous substances. After the accident scene was cleared, rescue efforts began. The road was reopened after about seven hours. Comrades from the fire brigades Spielberg, Vöcklamarkt, Waschprechting, Wilding-Mühlberg, Puchheim and Vöcklabruck were involved.
Breath test positive
The driver’s breath test was positive; she had approximately one permille of alcohol in her blood. As a result, her driver’s license was temporarily revoked and charges are being filed. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident.
