Thousands protested against mass tourism in Mallorca. Under the motto “Let’s say that’s it!” people gathered in the center of the island’s capital, Palma, on Saturday evening. The police spoke of 10,000 demonstrators.
The number of participants far exceeded expectations, wrote the newspaper “Diario de Mallorca”. The people came from all parts of the island, it was said.
Four dead after club collapse
The demonstration was influenced on Thursday evening by the collapse of the Ballermann restaurant. Four people died in the accident, including two young women from Germany. Residents of Playa de Palma, which is mainly visited by German tourists, are convinced that many buildings in the area are not suitable for mass tourism.
Tourism is essential to the island’s economy. The industry accounts for 45 percent of Mallorca’s economic output. In the meantime, almost no one doubts the need to limit the number of visitors.
