Latvia wants to release 20 million euros this year for the development of drones. “We can talk metaphorically about building a drone army,” Defense Minister Andris Spruds said in Riga.
Investments will be made both in infrastructure development and in the purchase of drones – including from Latvian companies. “We are strengthening the entire ecosystem and at the same time our own industry,” said the Latvian minister.
According to Spruds, the industry is able to “create, develop and deploy these technologies in innovative ways, both for our armed forces and in support of Ukraine.” For example, a drone test site at the Latvian military base Selija will be put into use this summer. Drone pilots will also be trained at different levels of the defense sector and an ideas hackathon “Drones for Ukraine” will take place at the end of this month, Spruds said.
Latvia is leading an alliance with Britain to supply a million drones to Ukraine, which is under attack by Russia. The dozen or so members – including Germany – have committed to investing resources in drone production and supplying drones and spare parts to Ukraine.
