Due to financial problems, an Austrian (29) is said to have fabricated a robbery in Vienna-Leopoldstadt. At the time, he tried to convince police that two strangers had threatened him with a knife at an ATM. 50,000 euros were stolen. This now has consequences for the man.
The incident is said to have occurred in early May. At around 11.20am, the 29-year-old alerted police and said he had been robbed by two unknown men. The robbers masterminded by the man demanded cash from him and threatened him with a knife.
Theft invented out of financial need
The alleged victim is said to have previously withdrawn 50,000 euros from a bank. A second interrogation with the 29-year-old took place in mid-May. He reconfirmed the information until he finally had to relent due to inconsistent details. “He then stated that he had fabricated the robbery out of financial difficulties,” police spokeswoman Barbara Gass said on Tuesday.
The Austrian is now being charged
Nevertheless, the young man now faces the consequences. “He is reported to the police on suspicion of falsifying an act that can be punished and of giving false evidence,” said Gass.
