Barely any oxygen – Mount Everest: it accumulates in the death zone

Date:

There has been another major traffic jam on Mount Everest – in the so-called death zone at an altitude of over 8,000 meters. Because the oxygen level is very low, you should only stay there for as short a time as possible.

The close gathering of mountain climbers and mountain guides led to a dangerous situation, according to several Sherpas present.

During the traffic jam on May 21, a snow ridge collapsed at the 8,849-metre peak, carrying away several people, according to mountain guide and eyewitness Narendra Shahi Thakuri, who also took photos of the crowd. “Four people were pulled back up, two disappeared. It was scary.”

The two missing are a British mountaineer (40) and his Nepalese mountain guide (23). Despite a several-day search, their bodies have not yet been found, a Nepalese official at the base camp of the world’s highest mountain said. According to their shipping company, the search has now been called off.

The collapse of the snow ridge also temporarily damaged the route to the summit, which had been secured with ropes by Sherpas and aggravated the already existing traffic jam, Narendra Shahi Thakuri noted. This meant that about 60 people had to interrupt their ascent or descent for more than half an hour.

Five deaths already this season
According to the Nepal Tourism Authority, a total of five people have died on Mount Everest during the current peak season. Their bodies have also been found. Three others are missing – including the Brit and his Nepalese mountain guide. There are always traffic jams on the mountain. One reason for this is the large number of mountain climbers, although many of them do not have sufficient experience.
