A new generation of Windows computers is in the starting blocks: AI PCs with Microsoft’s Copilot+ technology, supported by ChatGPT maker OpenAI, are intended to fully support us in using our PCs, knowing the wishes of users and transform computer amateurs into image editing professionals – that’s what Microsoft’s marketing promises. The aim is to offer forgetful people a reminder service that continuously records and examines what happens on the screen. Can this work?
Microsoft’s AI PCs with Copilot+ mark a turning point in the company’s strategy: a new attempt to position Windows as the operating system for ARM processors such as in smartphones or Apple’s Macbooks. Previous attempts, such as Windows RT, failed due to insufficient compatible software and performance that was too low for ‘full-size’ PCs. But ARM technology has now gone from strength to strength, and Apple has improved both performance and battery life with the move. With AI PCs using Qualcomm’s ARM processors, Microsoft is now looking to catch up and integrate AI technologies more deeply into the operating system. But to be useful, the tools need to know the users – and keep an eye on them all the time.
