A trial surrounding a supermarket robbery in Hollabrunn ended on Wednesday in Korneuburg with two convictions for attempted aggravated robbery and serious material damage. A Lithuanian must be sentenced to three years in prison, his accomplice two and a half years. According to information from the court, the rulings are already legally binding.
The two men are believed to be members of a nine-member Lithuanian group of perpetrators who specifically targeted food markets. The suspects allegedly broke into the supermarket in Hollabrunn on the evening of January 25, 2019. Several employees were brought into the storage room with CO2 pistols and the men tied the victims’ arms behind their backs with cable ties.
Employee injured in attack
After the suspects obtained the company keys, they allegedly tried in vain to break into the safe. According to previous police reports, the duo fled without taking anything and one employee was slightly injured.
Guilty verdicts as additional penalties
The Lithuanians have already spent several years in prison for an armed robbery of a jewelry store in Germany. After serving their sentences, the men against whom European arrest warrants were outstanding were extradited to Austria in February and April. The suspects were transferred to Korneuburg prison. Wednesday’s guilty verdicts are considered additional punishments to the convictions in Germany.
A series of brutal robberies
The two men are said to be members of a nine-member Lithuanian gang that was investigated in the summer of 2019. The criminals are said to have attacked shops in Lower Austria at irregular intervals and in different constellations and were extremely brutal. The gang was also assigned to an armed robbery of a supermarket, including a brief hostage situation in Günselsdorf (Baden district) on February 16, 2019. Five Lithuanian citizens received prison sentences of seven to 19 years in February 2020 at the Wiener Neustadt Regional Court. .
