Emberger Alm – Paragliding and hang gliding: two pilots crashed

Date:

Numerous pilots could now enjoy the view, the wind and life on the Emberger Alm, where hang gliding championships were also held. However, two Germans had to be taken to hospitals.

Around noon, a 36-year-old German took off with his paraglider from the Emberger Alm in the municipality of Berg im Drautal for a recreational flight above Lienz, through the Mölltal, to Villach and back to Greifenburg.

When the man wanted to cross the ridge of the Schwanspitz in the municipality of Flattach – at about 2,680 meters above sea level – at a low altitude towards the north, his paraglider collapsed; The trigger for this may have been a sudden loss of mountain wind.

The 36-year-old fell from a height of about 20 meters and was injured several meters south of the summit.

Another paraglider pilot who had witnessed the accident started the rescue chain with his mobile phone. Due to the impassable terrain, the police helicopter and the C7 rescue helicopter were used to search for the victim. The seriously injured man was rescued with rope and flown to UKH Klagenfurt.

Emergency landing in the field
Also on the Emberger Alm and also on Wednesday, a 25-year-old German took off with her hang glider for a leisure flight into the valley to Greifenburg. The international hang gliding championships have just taken place on the mountain meadow.

When approaching the landing site in Greifenburg, she probably had to land in a nearby field with tall grass due to a flight error. The young woman stabbed the ground with the tip of her hang glider, injuring herself to an unspecified degree.

A doctor who happened to be there gave the 25-year-old first aid. She was then taken to the hospital in Spittal an der Drau by the rescue team.
