Russian attacks – electricity rates in Ukraine have increased by 60 percent

Date:

Due to the Russian attacks on power stations (see video above), electricity rates in Ukraine have now increased by more than 60 percent. “The goal is not to remain without electricity and maintain the system,” Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko said on Friday.

Significant sums are needed to repair damaged power stations, substations and power lines. “Unfortunately, it is clear that enemy bombardment of energy objects will continue and we must use all possible means.” This is the second huge increase in electricity prices for Ukrainians since the start of the war.

From Saturday you will pay about ten cents per kilowatt hour. For the heating period from October 1, 2024 to April 30, 2025, there are exceptions for electric heaters. They pay about six cents per kilowatt hour if monthly consumption is less than 2,000 kilowatt hours. According to Halushchenko, the market price is currently the equivalent of just under 17 cents per kilowatt hour.

Imports from EU countries compensate for this to a certain extent
Since March, Ukraine has lost nearly 8,000 megawatts of power plant capacity. These losses can only be partially compensated by the import of electricity from EU countries. Before the war, most of the electricity was generated by nuclear power plants.

There are currently three nuclear power plants with nine reactors under Ukrainian occupation, with a total capacity of just over 7,800 megawatts. The country’s and Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhia, has been occupied by Russian forces since March 2022. All six blocks are closed for safety reasons.
