A tragic incident occurred on Thursday in the Tyrolean Kaiser Mountains between Kufstein and Kirchdorf in Tyrol, in which a mountaineer was buried under rubble. So far he has not been found. The victim could only be found thanks to two sniffer dogs from the mountain rescue service.
At the Stripsenjoch (1577 meters) in the Kaiserbachtal, a mountaineer is said to have been hit by an avalanche and buried under a two to three meter high rock layer. It is not yet known who the victim is. A search was launched and two dog handlers were also involved. The avalanche search dogs were finally able to track the man down under a huge rocky outcrop, but he couldn’t be seen.
“You can’t survive something like that”
It was not yet possible to save the victim because there was still a risk of another stone chipping. There is hardly any hope left for the climber. “There are three boulders three meters high,” says dog handler Richard Pali of the St. Johann mountain rescue service, who was involved in the search with his dog “Lilli”.
Pali assumes that the victim will have to be rescued with heavy equipment: “You can’t survive something like that.” The climber may have been with several comrades. Apparently he was about to rappel down first when the avalanche of rocks hit him.
