The Ministry of the Interior is still thinking hard about returning refugees to their countries of origin, while they await the outcome of the asylum assessment procedure underway in Austria: “We are only at the beginning in this regard, but for example, for refugees from North Africa, such as from Tunisia or Morocco, who have little prospect of a positive refugee decision, that would be a sensible approach,” Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said in “Television” with Gerhard Koller.
There are hardly any international examples of this, only Great Britain is currently implementing this with refugees from Rwanda, Denmark is considering such an approach. But this is not widely used anywhere. Also because there are hardly any third countries that want to take back refugees.
At the same time, Karner warns against the increasingly brutal methods of the smuggling mafia, which is currently also using the war in Ukraine as an excuse to convince potential refugees in other countries that “everyone would be accepted and can work here too” in Europe. Which of course is wrong, but serves as a lure. To this end, it is important that the EU takes effective action against the machinations of the smuggling mafia.
