What an ordeal – and in this weather! A Chinese mountain biker (36), who wanted to ride in winter conditions in summer clothing from the Tyrolean Zillertal via the Pfitscher Joch to South Tyrol, literally got stuck in the fresh snow. Curious: Only 18 hours into the tour, in the middle of the night, did the 36-year-old raise the alarm because he was completely exhausted.
On Friday morning around 9 a.m., the Chinese left Mayrhofen in the Tyrolean Zillertal on his mountain bike. ‘In summer clothes’, as the police described it. The 36-year-old wanted to cycle over the Pfitscher Joch to South Tyrol. He was undeterred by the weather forecast – or he had no idea about it.
The mountain biker rode to the “Schlegeis” reservoir, where he already felt the winter conditions. But the Chinese clearly did not want to give up. What followed was real torture!
Emergency call only in the middle of the night
At around 2:30 am (!) the cyclist was about 200 meters below the mountain pass in deep winter terrain. 20 centimeters of fresh snow, with even more snow showers in some places!
“Due to the increasing fresh snow and ultimately exhaustion, the 36-year-old got stuck in the snow on his mountain bike. “The man eventually made an emergency call, after which the Ginzling mountain rescue service was alerted,” the director reported.
Handed over to South Tyrolean colleagues
But due to better road access, the operation was eventually handed over to the South Tyrolean colleagues of the Vipiteno mountain rescue service. “The emergency services were finally able to find the exhausted, slightly hypothermic, but otherwise uninjured cyclist around 4:30 am at approximately 2,200 meters above sea level on the Pfitscher Joch,” the police said.
The Chinese man was eventually taken by mountain rescuers to the valley in Vipiteno and escorted to a shelter there.
