New details – What is known about the Mannheim stabber

Date:

After the knife attack at an event organized by the Islamist movement Pax Europa (BPE) in Mannheim, an arrest warrant was issued for the 25-year-old attacker. He is charged with attempted murder, the Karlsruhe Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on Saturday. The man was apparently not known to the authorities.

The man, born in Afghanistan, has lived in Germany since 2014. He is married and has two children. The attacker wounded five members of the civil movement Pax Europa and a police officer on the market square in Mannheim around noon on Friday, seriously injuring the latter.

On Friday evening, police searched the apartment of suspect Sulaiman A. He lived in a high-rise building in Heppenheim, Hesse, about 35 kilometers northeast of Mannheim. During the raid, investigators seized data carriers that are now being evaluated. A. was born in Herat, Afghanistan.

The perpetrator has not been spotted so far
According to the German Mirror, the Afghan was previously inconspicuous and therefore not known to the authorities. However, investigators currently suspect an Islamist motive for the crime.

According to the information, A. injured a total of six people with his knife. The police officer has now been placed in an artificial coma. “His life is still in danger,” a spokesperson for the National Criminal Investigation Department said on Saturday. BPE board member Michael Stürzenberger, who was injured in the attack, spoke from the hospital on Saturday. “It was very close yesterday,” he wrote on Telegram.

Anti-Islam activist thanks doctors
Stürzenberger reported on Saturday that he had suffered multiple stab wounds, one of which in the thigh caused “significant blood loss.” He also suffered facial injuries. Stürzenberger thanked all the doctors involved and the facial surgeons “who came especially from a special clinic”.

The act caused horror in Germany, and the Chancellor also commented on the knife attack:

Shortly after the attack, a video of the crime circulated on the Internet: it shows the attacker stabbing several people and bystanders shouting: “Get rid of the knife!” You also see an officer shooting at the attacker. Several police officers then pushed the man to the ground. According to the police, the Public Prosecution Service and the National Criminal Investigation Department, only one shot was fired. The Afghan is currently unfit to be interviewed.
