A brown bear was probably filmed in Lech on Wednesday romping in a meadow on the Arlberg. Wildlife ecologist Hubert Schatz is pretty sure it’s a bear. The animal could already be in the Bregenzerwald on Thursday.
Although Hubert Schatz does not want to commit 100 percent, he currently assumes that it was actually a brown bear that was filmed from a gondola in Lech on Wednesday. According to Schatz, there is only a risk of confusion with a shaggy large dog or an equal-sized sheep.
From Italy or Tyrol
But what does the sighting mean – the first since the appearance of the problem bear Bruno in 2006? “Now you have to watch out if the animal shows up somewhere and is seen again,” Schatz says. The bear probably comes from the Trentino people. But it is also possible that the bear migrated from Tyrol to Vorarlberg, because there were several bears there last year.
Is the bear dangerous?
In principle, a brown bear poses no danger to humans, because a brown bear smells extremely good and tends to avoid people. It can only become a problem if the animal has had the experience of getting food close to humans. In any case, the fact is: “The bear is a predator, it runs fast, climbs trees – and people don’t stand a chance against the bear”. Therefore, never provoke the animals, but slowly withdraw.
But it could end badly for bees, because bears love honey and destroy the beehives to satisfy their hunger. An encounter with the bear can also end badly for sheep, goats or calves. Anyway, now we have to wait and see. It is possible that the bear is already (again) in Tyrol or in the Allgäu. But he might as well be wandering in the Bregenzerwald.
