In the intensive care unit of Mannheim Hospital, relatives currently fear for the life of police officer Rouven L, who was seriously injured in the knife attack on Friday. But there is hardly any hope for the officer, a friend now reports.
“It was clear early on that he would not be able to survive this attack. But Rouven is an organ donor. He is being kept alive on the heart-lung machine,” a family friend told “Bild” on Sunday.
“He risked his life for our safety”
And adds: “He risked his life for our safety and would like to give other people a new life as an organ donor. He has so many plans of his own and is a wonderful person. We are all devastated.”
The perpetrator is still not fit to stand trial
Seven people were injured in the knife attack on Mannheim’s market square. The attacker, born in Afghanistan, still cannot be interviewed. The motive remains unclear, a spokeswoman for the Baden-Württemberg state criminal investigation department said on Sunday. The 25-year-old was also injured and subsequently underwent surgery.
According to the Karlsruhe public prosecutor’s office, an arrest warrant has now been issued for him. He is charged with attempted murder. He has lived in Germany since 2014. He is married, has two children and recently lived in Heppenheim, Hesse.
