Desperate scratching from a rainwater drain in Schwechat, Lower Austria, prompted residents to call the fire brigade on Sunday. Four ducklings were rescued and returned to their mother.
On Sunday, a desperate scratch from a storm sewer caused a stir. Neighbors, concerned about the ducks, called the Schwechat fire brigade.
Four chicks between the manhole covers
According to the Schwechat Volunteer Fire Department, four small chicks were stuck between the manhole covers. To reach them, the sewer pipe between the rainwater inlets was carefully filled with water. An employee wearing protective equipment sat down in the shaft with an animal transport box.
Ducks are safe – mother is waiting
An initial rescue attempt by the fire brigade failed. With the construction plans for the canal system and the involvement of a construction site employee, the ducks were brought to safety two hours later. They were handed over to the mother duck who was already waiting.
