Sad certainty! – Police officer dies after knife attack in Mannheim

Date:

Since Friday afternoon, doctors have been fighting for the life of the police officer, who was stabbed several times in the head during the brutal knife attack in Mannheim. Now there is a sad certainty: his life could no longer be saved, various official bodies announced on Sunday evening.

The video of the attack shocked all of Germany in recent days and hours. It showed how the perpetrator from Mannheim stabbed the now deceased police officer several times in the head from behind. Particularly tragic: in the chaos that broke out, the officer was busy putting the wrong man on the ground.

After the knife attack that left seven people injured on Mannheim’s market square, the attacker still cannot be questioned. The motive remains unclear, a spokeswoman for the Baden-Württemberg state criminal investigation department said on Sunday. However, in investigative circles there is talk of an Islamist motive, German media report.

Attacker cannot be interrogated
The Afghan-born man injured several people, including the deceased police officer, in the attack during an event organized by the anti-Islam movement Pax Europa (BPE) on Friday. The attacker was himself shot by an officer and is still unfit for questioning.

After the knife attack, heated scenes played out in the city’s market square on Sunday. A non-partisan alliance had called for a vigil against violence and hatred. At the same time, a Young Alternative rally also took place on the market square. The meeting of the AfD youth organization was held under the motto “Remigration would have prevented this act!”

Turbulent scenes during the wake
Videos on the internet show protesters forming a long human chain in the downtown area – and police clashing with a group of Antifa activists. They waved red flags and set Bengalos on fire. The slogan ‘Nazis out’ was chanted on the market square.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced tough measures against the violence in view of the knife attack and an attack on CDU politician Roderich Kiesewetter. “Whether this is violence against democratic politicians on the left, in the center or on the right – it is always unacceptable and we will not tolerate it,” Scholz stressed.

“We will take action against anyone who tries to use violence to restrict democratic space,” he announced. This applies regardless of whether there is a left-wing extremist, right-wing extremist or Islamist motive.
