Dr. Georg Friebe from inatura Dornbirn explains in the “Krone” interview why biodiversity is so essential – not only for wildlife, but also for people.
“Krone”: The concept of biodiversity has become increasingly popular in recent years. Why is the topic so important?
George Friebe: There is more to it than we realize. For example, insects are usually only perceived as a nuisance, such as mosquitoes. But insects are very important players in agriculture, not just honey bees. Many plants are pollinated by other animals. When they’re gone, we’re missing something. Insects are also often food for birds and small mammals. Without this food, the bird population declines. And who doesn’t like hearing the birds chirping outside the window in the morning? Birds are also supervisors when it comes to pests.
