Many spectators – floods in Upper Austria: “The great danger has been averted”

Date:

The flooding kept emergency services across Upper Austria on their toes on Tuesday. In the evening hours there was a slight clarification from the state hydrographic service: the water level of the Danube had reached its peak in Linz, and the water level in the entire state was expected to drop again during the night.

In the end, more rain fell than expected! On Tuesday morning, the flood situation in Upper Austria became dramatic again: “Last night’s rainfall was not taken into account in the forecasts, the Inn brought the heavy rain from the Northern Alps faster than expected,” explains Christian Wakolbinger from the Hydrographer of Upper Austria out. employ. That is why the Inn and the Danube have overflowed their banks.

In Linz on Tuesday evening, the Danube overflowing its banks did not stop some people from taking advantage of the sports equipment and open spaces on the Donaulände in Urfahr – as our video below shows. There were also many onlookers marveling at the bodies of water and taking photos.

Shipping on the Danube stopped
In Linz, the Danube flooded the Urfahraner market area early Tuesday morning – a water level of 6.86 meters was measured. The city had additional mobile protective dams built. On the Linz side, roads in the Römerberg tunnel area were closed and navigation on the Danube was stopped. The city imposed a walking and cycling ban on the paths on either side of the river and called on citizens in a broadcast to avoid the area near the water so as not to take any risks and not to disrupt the work. During the day, flood protection was also extended in Mauthausen and Grein.

In Schärding, the Innpromenade and the parking lot of the shipping pier were closed on Monday evening and additional elements of mobile flood protection were installed overnight. Fire departments across the country were active on 100 operations on Tuesday.

Relaxation at night
“The Bavarian Danube is still very high, which means that the Danube also remains high in Upper Austria,” says Wakolbinger. However, in the evening hours he gave the signal: “The major danger has been averted because the precipitation forecast for Wednesday in the area around Upper Austria is harmless. That obviously has a positive effect.”

In Schärding the level of the Inn had already started to drop during the day, and in Linz the Danube had already reached its peak in the evening. “We are still dealing with rising water levels up to Grein,” Wakolbinger explains. The peak was also reached there during the course of Wednesday night and declining levels are expected.
