The number of infections is rising again. For many people, the third sting was already a while ago. Virologist Dorothee von Laer advises risk groups to get the fourth vaccination before the summer and before the new modified vaccine comes on the market. However, she says she will “wait for the modified vaccine in the fall”.
The current picture of Portugal is disturbing. The death toll continues to rise. But for virologist von Laer, it’s clear: “Many infected people also mean more deaths.” The number of new corona infections in Austria is also increasing every day. At the moment, however, there is no adequate overview of the contamination process in the federal states, said von Laer on Thursday evening in “ZiB 2”. Low test activities lead to low incidences, high test activities – as in Vienna – to high incidences.
As the numbers rise, the mask rises too
“A measure that yields a lot and is not very onerous is still the mask,” explains the expert. She advises to continue wearing the mask in the summer, because one thing is certain: “The mask will come first when the numbers increase again.” Von Laer also supports the recommendation for the fourth stitch for the summer. At least all those who belong to the risk group or who socialize a lot.
A new vaccine is expected to be released in the autumn. One that has been adapted to the Omicron variant and is intended to give more immunity. “I am waiting for the modified vaccine in the autumn,” the virologist adds.
It is uncertain whether the new vaccine will have the desired effect in the autumn. Could there be no new variant? But the virologist is confident: “At the moment, Omikron is optimal and dominates the infection process worldwide.” One can argue the end of a quarantine obligation for infected people: “That is a political decision. Five days of isolation for the sick makes sense. Not for contacts.”
