Russia has warned Finland that it will take measures from “military-technical response” following his decision to join NATO at short notice, which Moscow says threatens stability and security in Northern Europe.
“Russia will be forced to take both military-technical and other measures to face the threats that have arisen to its national security,” Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
Unexpectedly, the announcement was no longer a pitcher of cold water for Moscow, which had always maintained a privileged relationship with the Scandinavian country after the Winter War both of which took place between 1939 and 1940.
The second Russian city, St Petersburgis only 200 kilometers from Finland, to which we must also add the proximity of the border of the port of Severomorsk (Barents Sea), the base of the Russian Northern Fleet.
“The aim of NATO (…) is clear: to continue its expansion into the Russian borders, to create a new flank of military threat to our country,” Russian diplomacy denounced.
Moscow believes that the announcement of the Finnish leaders is a “radical change in that country’s foreign policy”
Along the same lines, the Kremlin has insisted that, despite the current military conflict in Ukraine, “NATO is moving to our side”.
“These are all elements for a special analysis and for the necessary measures to balance the situation and ensure our safety,” he said. Dmitry PeskovyKremlin spokesman, during his daily telephone press conference.
When asked what Russia’s response to Finland’s accession might be, he replied: “Everything will depend on how further expansion unfolds, how close the military infrastructure is to our borders.”
