“I am done” – with the famous words of football coach Giovanni Trapattoni, suspected Russian spy Egisto Ott, who is in custody, began writing a letter to then Interior Minister Karl Nehammer in 2020. The ‘Crown’ knows what else is in the bizarre and still secret document.
According to the dictionary, an open letter is a “letter published in the press to a prominent personality or institution, raising an issue of concern to the general public, expressing criticism, or the like.” However, not all open letters actually find their way to the public quickly. This is also the case with a previously completely unknown letter from suspected Russian spy and former Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution Egisto Ott from May 2020.
Ministry as ‘swingers club’
The recipient of the letter written by e-mail is Ott’s boss at the time, the Minister of the Interior and the current ÖVP Chancellor Karl Nehammer. The ÖVP has “created a swingers club” from the Ministry of the Interior, Ott writes in the letter, which contains bizarre accusations, which is available to “Krone” and which the high-ranking police officer begins with the famous quote from the former Italian football coach Giovanni Trapattoni : “I’m ready.”
“Danger to life and limb”
But first: who exactly is Egisto Ott and why is he in prison? Ott was arrested at his home in Carinthia on Good Friday. He was then placed in solitary confinement – also for security reasons. Due to the ‘danger to life and limb’, his interrogation in the U-Committee even had to be canceled on the advice of the authorities.
The former high-ranking police officer is accused of conducting illegal investigations as a BVT agent, selling the mobile phones of three former high-ranking Interior Ministry employees and spying for Russia. Ott is also considered one of the alleged authors of the famous pamphlet, which in turn led to the search of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Combating of Terrorism (BVT), which later turned out to be illegal.
Ott is presumed innocent. He himself denies all allegations. “It is an absurd construction, the evidence is more than thin. He is being made a scapegoat here,” Ott’s lawyer Jürgen Stephan Mertens told the media. During his police career, Ott liked to make others the scapegoat, sometimes in a bizarre way. This is evident in black and white from the open letter that is available to the “Krone” and was delivered as part of the U-Committee files.
