He was 49 centimeters long and weighed 2,600 grams, but the child had no chance of a happy life. His mother killed him after birth. The autopsy revealed blunt force trauma to the head, fifteen stab wounds to the neck, and strangulation by a gift ribbon still hanging around the newborn boy’s neck. The mother, father and aunt will appear in court in Leoben (Styria) on Wednesday. The first statements were already made around lunchtime.
The young couple has been together since 2016. The two kept their relationship a secret out of fear of their parents. “In mid-2022, the now 29-year-old became pregnant,” says prosecutor Sabrina Berger, but the young woman did not realize that she was pregnant with a child. On the night of the crime, she only felt a contraction in her stomach. “It was actually contractions.”
Skull fracture and knife wounds
Shortly afterwards, the suspect gave birth to a healthy boy. “She cut the umbilical cord with craft scissors and wrapped the baby in a blue bathrobe.” Only the defendant knows what happened over the next three to four hours. According to the autopsy report, the newborn had a skull fracture caused by immense blunt force. It had been strangled with the gift ribbon. The forensic doctor also counted fifteen stab wounds in the neck. “Inflicted with the same craft scissors that had previously cut the umbilical cord,” the prosecutor said.
The defendant confessed from the start that she had murdered her son in the “despicable manner described.” Because she was in a state of psychological emergency as a result of the unexpected birth, she is only charged with infanticide and not murder.
“I swear I didn’t notice anything.”
The father must answer for not providing help. Although his mother sent him several messages and photos, he did not come to her rescue. “I couldn’t imagine that she was actually pregnant. “I swear by all the saints, I didn’t notice anything,” he assured judge Roman Weiss through tears.
“This is crazy. Don’t be mad at me, but you can’t be that stupid!” The chairman couldn’t believe that the suspect didn’t think it was worth checking his girlfriend – despite the blood-stained photos. “The biggest mistake of my life,” he says calmly. “You are aware that your son would still be alive if you had responded sooner,” the prosecutor accuses him. “He would be a year and a half old now.”
Sister-in-law found woman in pool of blood
It wasn’t until the next day, hours later at football training, that he got a bad feeling and raised the alarm. The sister-in-law rushed into the apartment and found the woman covered in blood, unconscious on the bathroom floor. Then she discovered the dead child in the bedroom.
Baby and murder weapon in garbage bag
While waiting for rescue, she put the dead child and scissors in garbage bags and started cleaning the apartment. “Why? Why do you hide the baby and the scissors in green garbage bags and mop the apartment? That seems like a classic cover-up to me!” the judge mutters. “I was in shock, I was pregnant myself,” the woman cries bitter tears . “Don’t know. I didn’t want to cover anything up.”
The interview with the mother is scheduled for the afternoon. Before that, there had already been the (non-legally binding) judgments for the sister-in-law and the 26-year-old father. Both got off lightly because of their confessions. The newborn’s aunt was given a three-month probation for concealing evidence and disturbing the peace of the dead, while the footballer was fined 1,500 euros for failing to provide assistance.
