Heavy thunderstorms with heavy rain, showers and hail threaten to hit the entire country on Thursday. According to predictions, the formation of so-called multicells and supercells is even possible.
In the morning, Thursday is still largely friendly. According to the Austrian Severe Weather Center, cumulus clouds quickly form in the mountains and there are sometimes heavy rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon.
“Due to the high storm energy and the well-sheared air mass, some cells can quickly organize themselves and become very strong,” the experts say. According to forecasts, the Murtal, Western Styria and the eastern areas of Carinthia in the south are particularly at risk.
In the north, the greatest risk of heavy thunderstorms is in the south of Upper Austria, in the Mostviertel and parts of the industrial district in Lower Austria. In already polluted areas where the soil can no longer absorb water, local flooding is possible.
Towards the evening the thunderstorms decrease and disappear. According to Geosphere meteorologists, daily highs could reach 28 degrees.
High chance of thunder this weekend
Thunderstorms will hit Austria again on Friday afternoon. Hail and heavy rain must again be taken into account. It will probably remain dry in the far east.
It will also remain largely unstable on Saturday and Sunday, with the sun appearing most often in the east.
