Little Jonas Elian was born in Vienna much sooner than expected: a trip to the hospital was no longer possible – and so mother Nike gave birth to her son in her own apartment within 45 minutes.
When mom Nike went into labor early in the morning of May 16, she sent her husband Marcel off quietly with the dog.
Father: “My pulse has risen to 3000”
When he returned to the apartment they shared in Floridsdorf, it was clear: a visit to the hospital was no longer an option. “When it became clear that Jonas would be better off being born at home, it felt as if my heart rate had risen to 3000,” says Marcel. He immediately alerted the rescue team.
“We entered the apartment and were surprised at how far the labor had progressed,” recalls paramedic Lisa from the Vienna Samaritan Association. The mother was already on the floor in contractions. It was also quickly clear to the Viennese professional rescue team that arrived shortly afterwards: “It was no longer possible to transport him to hospital,” said paramedic Markus.
Shortly after 5 a.m. – just 45 minutes after the first contraction – little Jonas was born in his parents’ apartment weighing 48 centimeters and 2,600 grams. Both mother and son were doing well and were taken to the nearest clinic.
Unforgettable experience
Two weeks later, the family – the couple already has a daughter – personally thanked the Vienna Professional Rescue Service and the Vienna Samaritan Association. Together they thought about the exciting mission. For emergency paramedic Markus and emergency doctor Fritz, this was also the first pre-hospital birth – and therefore an unforgettable experience.
