Violent lightning strike – thunder chaos: many Viennese were stuck in the elevator

The heavy storms on Thursday evening caused a lot of chaos in Vienna: there were numerous floods, fallen trees and power outages. Many residents were stuck in elevators during the storm, the professional fire brigade reported on Friday.

Due to heavy rain and violent thunderstorms, there were numerous operations in Vienna on Thursday evening. A single-family home caught fire on Antonie-Platzer-Gasse in Penzing after a lightning strike. According to the Vienna Fire Department, the roof had to be opened with chainsaws. The fire was extinguished with three extinguishing lines.

In Währingerstrasse, lightning split a tree about 15 meters high. According to the emergency services, a large part of the building had fallen on the house and had to be removed by the fire brigade.

As reported, there was also excitement on the Belt: due to the heavy rain, it was even flooded at times! A number of traffic lights were out and traffic jams immediately formed.

Some people also had to make do without electricity in the evenings. In the meantime, about twenty people were also locked in elevators. The prisoners had to be rescued. The fire brigade also had to deal with loose parts, fallen trees and broken branches.

Between 9:00 PM and 2:00 AM there were approximately 70 missions.
