Fortunately, nothing happened: On Thursday, a cache of unused grenades from the Second World War was discovered during excavation work in Krieglach (Styria). Because the site was close to a train route, train traffic had to be stopped.
The explosive discovery took place on Thursday afternoon during excavation work for the district heating: around 3:30 p.m. the first two grenades were discovered and the Federal Army’s mine clearance service was immediately contacted. Because the grenades were found not far from the railway line between Krieglach and Langenwang, the railway line was also closed for safety reasons.
But after half an hour, the experts were able to give the first signal: there was no immediate danger and the trains were allowed to run again.
The next surprise came during the work of the bomb dismantler: there were a total of 62 grenades – probably a warehouse of unused ammunition from the Second World War. They have been taken away and will be blown up in a controlled manner in a safe place.
