With a population of just over nine million, Israel is not a particularly large country, but its arms industry is one of the best in the world. The Israeli Defense Forces are accordingly modernly equipped – for example with the Merkava-4. The main battle tank, which has been in production since 2003, is one of the most modern in the world and is designed to survive even rocket-propelled grenade fire thanks to its high-tech defense system. Nevertheless, Hamas fighters managed to destroy the steel colossus on Saturday using surprisingly primitive means.
Weighing more than 60 tons, an engine power of 1,500 hp and a 120-millimeter smoothbore cannon: Israel’s most powerful main battle tank, whose name means “chariot”, has similar specifications to the American M1 Abrams or the Leopard 2 from Germany. However, one feature sets the Merkava-4 apart: it has a so-called hardkill system that should make it immune to anti-tank weapons. However, images of a burning Merkava tank circulating on social media show that Hamas terrorists overcame the high-tech defense system with simple but effective means.
