In the case of the three-year-old boy from the Tyrolean district of Kufstein, who died as a result of severe malnutrition, the pre-trial detention of the parents (25 and 26 years old) was extended at the Innsbruck Regional Court on Friday. The same grounds for detention would still exist as if pre-trial detention were imposed.
The parents, who were strongly suspected of the crime, had to be taken into custody due to the risk of committing the crime. This was assumed against the background that the couple had three other children. These were still under the care of child and youth care, Social Affairs Councilor Eva Pawlata (SPÖ) said on Thursday on the sidelines of a press conference against the APA news agency. The next detention review will take place in a month’s time.
Parents would have let their child starve
Authorities say the parents did not give the child enough food and water for “at least several weeks.” There was also suspicion that the parents had failed to contact a doctor ‘despite the apparent deterioration of his health and his apparent weight loss’, so the boy eventually died.
The father initially said nothing, but the mother stated that the child had been ill for the past few weeks and had no appetite. A visit to the doctor was planned soon.
Autopsy confirmed terrible suspicions
The boy was found dead in his bed at the end of May, after which his father called the police. An autopsy ultimately revealed that the three-year-old child had died of starvation. After the parents were hospitalized due to a psychological emergency, they were arrested. The siblings – all girls – aged one, three and six years old showed no symptoms of deficiency. The family had also previously not attracted any attention from the authorities.
