Kiev buys time – Ukraine stops Russian offensive in Kharkov

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared the Russian offensive in Kharkiv’s eastern border area a failure, at least for now. However, further success would depend on further support.

“The Russian army has failed to carry out its operation in Kharkov,” Zelensky said in his evening video address on Saturday. “We are currently holding them back as best we can and destroying Russian units that are invading our country and terrorizing the Kharkiv region.”

Success limited in time
At the same time, Zelenskiy stressed that the region’s defense must be further strengthened. Russia launched an offensive on Kharkov in mid-May and occupied several Ukrainian border villages. Although there has been no major breakthrough so far, the regional capital of the same name, Kharkov, continues to be subjected to massive shelling.

Several Western allies – including Germany and the US – recently allowed Ukraine to attack targets on the Russian side of the border with weapons they supplied to defend Kharkiv.

France is very popular
In his speech, Zelensky once again thanked French President Emmanuel Macron for his support. Macron recently promised several fighter jets to the country attacked by Russia.

In France, US President Joe Biden also showed his willingness to jointly support Ukraine during a state visit. The US stands firmly on the side of Ukraine and on the side of its own allies, Biden said in Paris. He warned again: “Putin will not stop in Ukraine.”

Paris is putting pressure on us
However, there is disagreement between the two countries over whether Western military trainers should be sent to Ukraine. Macron had confirmed his intention to do so the evening before. However, the American government has made it clear that it does not want to participate in this. Neither Macron nor Biden raised the subject during their joint appearance.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has also once again clearly refused to send German soldiers to the war zone. “We will continue to prevent an escalation,” he said during an SPD election campaign in Duisburg. This includes the clear statement from Biden and himself, Scholz said: “There will be no soldiers from our countries in Ukraine nor from NATO.”

Want to train more efficiently in Ukraine?
Macron said Friday after a meeting with Zelensky in Paris about military trainers: “We want to have a coalition for reasons of efficiency, and several of our partners have already given their consent.” finalize the largest possible coalition called to respond to Ukraine’s request. Macron emphasized that this request was legitimate. Under certain circumstances, it is much more efficient and practical to train on Ukrainian soil.
