Flood alert – the situation in the south of the country remains tense

Date:

While hundreds of operational addresses are being processed by the volunteer fire brigade in the Oberwart district (Burgenland) after the heavy storms, the Federal Army’s relief operation has also been in full swing since noon. In the Jennersdorf district, especially in Rudersdorf, people are also preparing for the worst scenario.

There were scenes like those in the film that took place on Sunday evening in the Oberwart district of Burgenland. Flash floods caused by heavy rain turned entire cities into raging torrents. Wiesfleck and the districts of Schreibersdorf and Schönherrn, Unterschützen and Loipersdorf-Kitzladen were particularly affected. In addition, local flooding occurred in almost all communities along the Pinka. In Oberwart, Rotenturm and Siget in der Wart there was even a civil defense alarm in the early morning hours.

Millions of dollars in damage
As the day progressed, the full extent of the devastating storm quickly became clear: the damage will run into millions, the clean-up work will take weeks and, above all, people remain afraid of new floods, as the weather forecasts promise. no relaxation for the next few days.

3,500 firefighters battle masses of water and mud
According to the State Fire Brigade Association, there have been hundreds of operations in the Oberwart district with more than 3,500 members, 322 vehicles and 182 fire brigades. In addition, disaster response trains from the fire brigades from Central and Northern Burgenland have now arrived in the south of Burgenland and are providing assistance on site.

120 federal army soldiers in action
Since noon, 120 federal army soldiers have been deployed in the Oberwart district. In a telephone conversation with Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner, state governor Hans Peter Doskozil requested the assistance of the federal army and was assured. Moreover, all employees of the state road construction authorities were also sent to their offices on manual duty.

Promised quick aid from the country’s disaster funds
“The country will ensure that the necessary financial resources are available from the country’s disaster fund to provide the necessary support to people and communities affected by damage,” Doskozil reiterated. It is important to handle this financial assistance – including damage not covered by insurance – quickly and as unbureaucratically as possible.

Evacuation of retirement home: Red Cross ready
During the day the water moved further to the south of the country. In the Jennersdorf district, the 150 volunteer fire brigades are also preparing for possible flooding. Sandbags are filled, among other things. The situation is particularly tense in Rudersdorf, where the Lahn is currently flooded.

Three wooden footbridges, among others, have already been washed away by the water. The Red Cross is also alert, with 28 paramedics and an emergency doctor on site. It was said that if the Lahn continued to rise, a retirement home would have to be evacuated as soon as possible.
