Two Styrian heroes – “This is how we saved drivers from flash floods”

Date:

The next day in Deutschfeistritz, Styria: Saturday evening the entire city was flooded, people were trapped in cars and there was danger to their lives. Manuel Reinisch and Marton Gazdag were saved by a ladder.

Until 4 a.m., the comrades of the Deutschfeistritz Fire Department, with the support of other fire brigades, rescued people trapped in their cars and evacuated others from flooded houses, squares and streets, often at the very last minute.

A total of 50 ended up in life-threatening situations. “In the course of your firefighting life you have seen everything, experienced thousands of operations, but this dimension was unimaginable,” said fire chief Andreas Reiter, still stunned on Sunday morning.

The Bösebach burst its banks on Saturday evening, swelled into a raging river and flooded the city center. Although most Florianis did not close their eyes, they immediately started cleaning up after the dramatic emergency operations. Tired, but with the feeling of having done what was humanly possible: “It is very nice when you see the gratitude of the people you have brought to safety,” says Markus Untersteiner from the Deutschfeistritz fire brigade.

Like dozens of victims and volunteers, Manuel Reinisch and Marton Gazdag also do their part by shoveling rubble from the streets and carrying equipment from muddy basements and living rooms. When the flood swept away everything, they became a lifesaver.
