A thunderstorm “supercell” discharged its dangerous load over the Eiberg section of road between Söll and Kufstein (Tyrol) on Sunday evening. The result: more than twenty cars were damaged by the golf ball-sized hail. The occupants were rescued by the fire brigade! In the Zams area, a group of hikers with children were previously surprised by a mudslide.
GeoSphere’s “orange” warning level was not exaggerated: heavy storms hit the northern part of Tyrol again on Sunday. Heavy hailstorms fell in the Zams and Kufstein area, which especially surprised motorists in Eibergstrasse.
The hailstorm was so dramatic that car windows were broken. According to initial reports, twenty vehicles were so badly damaged that further driving was no longer possible. The prisoners were rescued by the local fire brigade and given first aid at the bases.
Mure in Zams: Road buried three meters high
Shortly before, around 4 p.m., on the other side of Tyrol in the west near Zams, a heavy storm with hail had passed over the Silberspitze northeast of Zams.
This caused a mudslide that flowed onto the Tyrolean state highway (B171), raising it to a height of about 50 meters to three meters. No vehicle was detected. De Mure also moved the unpaved access road to Alpe Alfuz and the Steinseehütte car park.
Children are also among affected hikers
This meant that the path was closed to a total of four adults and four children who were on the valley path from the hut. These were waiting in the area of the so-called Gaseilwiese and could be rescued from there by the Ministry of the Interior helicopter and brought into the valley.
Large-scale deployment of the fire brigade
No one was injured on the B171 and on the access road. The highway will remain closed until further notice – at least until Monday. Traffic will be diverted to the Inntal motorway via the Zams and Schönwies junctions until the B171 opens.
Due to the mudslide, the Zams fire brigade was deployed with 33 men, the Schönwies fire brigade with 13 men and the Landeck fire brigade with a drone and five men.
