Ceasefire in Gaza? – Hamas wants to accept the UN resolution

Date:

A US-drafted multi-phase plan for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is now receiving strong support. After the UN Security Council adopted a resolution on the matter on Monday, Hamas also indicated on Tuesday that it would agree to the plan and negotiate the details.

At the same time, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri emphasized that the US must ensure that Israel also adheres to the agreements. The government in Washington faces a real test to force Israel to “immediately end the war and thereby implement the UN Security Council resolution,” the Hamas representative said.

Israel for ceasefire “when war goals are achieved”
However, a member of the Israeli government emphasized that there could be no end to the war until “all the war objectives” were achieved. These included destroying Hamas’ military capabilities, freeing all hostages and guaranteeing that the Gaza Strip would not pose a threat to Israel in the future. “The proposal presented allows Israel to achieve these goals and Israel will do so.”

The resolution includes the three-phase ceasefire plan that US President Joe Biden presented on May 31 and described as an Israeli initiative. The text states that Israel has already accepted the plan. Israel and Hamas are called on to implement the conditions ‘immediately and unconditionally’.

Netanyahu’s government is also at stake
The political survival of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is also at stake. Netanyahu’s right-wing extremist coalition partners have threatened to overthrow the government if Israel implements the Biden-backed deal. They see the agreement as a surrender to Hamas. This is especially true since the departure of the more moderate Benny Gantz from the emergency government formed after the Hamas massacre on October 7.
