Following the accident at the OMV refinery in Schwechat last week that damaged the main distillation plant, the company has now introduced a new system to ensure fuel supply in Austria. The loss at Schwechat has to be compensated by the other refineries of the group and the production capacity of a smaller crude oil distillation plant has to be increased.
In addition, OMV wants to purchase the missing quantities, on which agreement has already been reached with logistics partners.
The accident is currently under investigation (see video below), but it is not yet possible to estimate how long it will take to repair the system.
The group’s other refineries in Burghausen (Southern Germany) and Petrobrazi (Romania) are to supply the Schwechat site with input materials and supply larger quantities of fuel to the Austrian market. All crude oil produced in Austria can be further processed without restrictions by using the production capacity of a smaller crude oil distillation plant.
In addition, the company is currently investigating whether production capacity in Schwechat can be increased through short-term adjustments.
The accident had recently led to bottlenecks in the supply of kerosene at Vienna airport.
